"We only truly know what we do": in the wake of Vico's thought, the course intends to organise a didactic experience whose focus is the practice of the project. In the wake of Vichi's thought, the course intends to organise a didactic experience whose focus will be on the praxis of the project. In this logic, the theoretical and reflective aspects will also have to find their field of elaboration, application and definitive revelation in the development of the compositional proposal.

Learning Objectives
The course aims to enable students to acquire a design method that provides a synthesis of the disciplinary contents of the two modules of the workshop. The acquisition of a design method that is constantly nourished by theoretical contents as well as by the knowledge of the history of architecture and the works of the masters of modern and contemporary architecture. The development of the ability to control the assigned design theme, both from the morphological-compositional, volumetric-spatial, device and distributive, technical and structural point of view, as well as from the architectural language and the relationship with the place.
Prerequisites
Those included in the course of studies.
The knowledge of Architectural Composition and its elements, the property of the tools of compositional investigation, the concept of place and type, as well as the mastery of the tools of architectural representation - orthogonal projections and three-dimensional representations, the knowledge of correct principles of functional distributive organisation of simple organisms. A basic knowledge of Italian architecture after the Second World War.

Teaching Methods
The workshop activities will be modelled on the example of design seminars or workshops; the time available will be entirely dedicated to the students' work on site - research, drawing, maquette; a modality that is a cast of what happens daily in a workshop/atelier. The frontal lesson will be interpreted as a brief communication on singular and specific aspects related to the topics dealt with. The project will be drawn up by working groups of a maximum of two students.

Exercises
Exercises are planned to enable students to acquire the minimum technical and methodological/compositional knowledge necessary to provide support for the examination theme design activity. All the exercises will be started in the classroom and continued on their own by the students who must, by the dates set in the calendar, hand in their work and, if necessary, make a brief presentation to the other students. The exercises will be considered as valid marks for the exam grade, and without having completed all of them it will not be possible to access the final evaluation.
The Laboratory allows students to work in groups exclusively for the project of the final examination paper.

Type of Assessment
The experiences carried out in the workshop will all be subject to specific assessment and will contribute to the final evaluation. The oral test will consist of a discussion of the project outcomes: ability to synthesise, rational argumentation, competence in the use of a specialised vocabulary are the main indicators in the verification of learning.
Course program
The teaching process tends to be always made up of a large theoretical component of in-depth study through thematic lectures and exercises that, in the course of the workshop, contribute to create the necessary sedimentary layer on which to set up the design path to be examined. Dialogue with contemporaneity, criticism of modernity, technical culture of building and representation of architecture are constant themes in the laboratory activities, also enlarged by the contribution of external teachers, often foreigners, through thematic lectures.
The central theme is the study of living in its various forms in relation to the city, the built and natural territory, seeking to provide students with the cultural and operational tools necessary to begin to understand the problems and use the terms of architectural composition.
The student must always have the necessary material to work in the classroom during the Laboratory hours, both for drawing activities (pencils, chine, glossy/powdery paper, scotch paper, eraser, rulers, squares, etc.) and for the creation of models.
The central theme is the study of living in its various forms in relation to the city, the built and natural territory, seeking to provide students with the cultural and operational tools necessary to begin to understand the problems and use the terms of architectural composition.
