Learning Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide the students with a knowledge of themes and aspects of ancient Roman Cultural History, Civilization, and Institutions through a focus on their reception, interpretation during Late Medieval and Modern Ages, as well as to increase their ability to interpret the sources, documents, modern studies regarding the topic selected, and to stimulate their interest in global and comparative research as well as in public history.
Prerequisites
Course with no prerequisites - However students are expected to have basic knowledge of Roman history and aptitude for comparative historical analysis.
Teaching Methods
Formal lessons and discussion on the topic of the course - Comparative analysis of classical sources and works of late medieval and modern culture related to the themes of the lessons.

The memory of monarchic and republican Rome and of the protagonists in Late Middle Age, Modern Age and Contemporary Age- CONDITIONS OF REGISTRATION AND ATTENDANCE: Classes are mandatory (2/3 at least) and monitored closely - Students are required to register during the first 2 weeks of classes.

Type of Assessment
Final oral examination through questions and discussion about themes presented during the classes, aiming to test students' familiarity with the basic concepts of the topic as well as their ability to interpret sources, to evaluate and criticize received opinion, to identify and paraphrase key ideas, to compare different views, to articulate and develop their understanding of the subject matter, to present topics through an appropriate vocabulary and clear and effective arguments.
Course program
The memory of monarchic and republican Rome in the Late Middle Age, Modern Age and Contemporary Age. The aim of the course is to investigate interpretation, reception and re-use of testimonies concerning events and institutional aspects of the monarchic and republican history in the 14th-18th centuries culture, with a special focus on political structures and the role played during particular periods by some protagonists, through the comparative analysis of classical and antiquarian texts, as well as through the reading of works by historians and thinkers starting from the Late Middle Age to Modern Age (Petrarch, Leonardo Bruni, Biondo Flavio, Machiavelli, Scipione Ammirato, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Gibbon, etc.), as well as through the reinterpretations offered by public history via web.
