The three lectures of the course will focus on the relationship between human settlements and riverine areas in the Middle Ages, from economic, social, cultural and religious perspectives

Learning Objectives
The lessons are intended to encourage a diachronic approach to the study of the relationship between man and the environment, highlighting the ways in which river ecosystems determined the development and difficulties of some large urban settlements in the Middle Ages
Prerequisites
European history of the 5th-15th centuries
Teaching Methods
Lectures and didactic excursion aimed at encouraging a direct approach to the Arno river environment in Florence
Further information
The lectures will be seminar-based and will require the constant presence of students both in the classroom lectures and in the excursions
Type of Assessment
Oral examination and discussion with students aimed at ascertaining the acquisition of historical awareness in relation to the relationship between human settlements and the ecosystem in the medieval age
Course program
The lectures will include an introduction to the theme of the relationship between man and the environment, with particular reference to European river cities in the Middle Ages. In the second part of the cycle we will deal with the example of Florence and its relationship with the river Arno, highlighting both the factors of economic development and the criticalities caused by frequent flooding
