Learning Objectives
Competence goals: The course offers the students who already have a basic knowledge of Modern history an overview of the main themes and problems which characterize the development of European historiography from 16th to 19th century, together with an overview of some major trends in contemporary historiography on Modern history.
Behaviour goals: stimulate a critical reflection on the characters of the historians' craft from XVIth to XIXth century.

A general knowledge of Modern European history from 16th to 19th century.
Teaching Methods
Lectures and seminars; external interventions, in English as well.

Type of Assessment
The examination will be oral, also for students not attending class or coming from foreign countries following Erasmus or other kinds of exchange programs. During the examination, questions (from two to four) will be asked to verify:
1) understanding and knowledge of historical processes;
2) understanding and knowledge of major topics;
3) understanding and knowledge of most important historical events and dates;
The final evaluation will be the result of the evalutions relating to the three cited sections.
Students can also integrate the oral examination with a written paper, agreed with the teacher, which will be orally discussed.

Course program
The class has two complementary sections. The first one deals with some of the main characters which define the identity of a ‘modern’ historiography since the 16th to the 19th century: theories of history, relationship between history and politics, topics in historical research, historians’ profiles, forms of historical communication. The second one deals with trends and problems of contemporary history concerning Modern age: the changing of the historiographical notion of ‘modernity’, some of the main topics in contemporary historiography on Modern history, some of the main methodological proposals.
