The course of history of western and Italian photography, from its beginning to the present.
The course is divided into two separate modules of 6 credits.
First module: institutional course of history of photography.
Second module: history of contemporary photography in Italy.

Learning Objectives
The course provides students with the methodological tools to convey fundamental knowledge in history of photography, analyzing photographs and materials, figurative languages and social uses from a cultural history perspective. Particular attention will be given to the historical-cultural context of the production and use of photographs, to the network of relationships, analyzing the topic of materiality.
The course includes the acquisition of historical and philological skills based on the interpretation of photographs, on the reconstruction of contexts and their relationships.
It will provide an outline of the history of the history of photography, the history of photographic archives and national description standards, as well as basic principles for the recognition of photographic techniques.
Knowledge and Understanding:
Knowledge of photographic works, understanding of the different contexts (places of production, taste, circulation).
Applied Knowledge and Understanding Capabilities:
Knowledge of the fundamentals in the history of photogray, capability to identify major works of art and to understand the relationship between different photographs.
Critical Ability:
Development of critical and analytical abilities to recognize photographs and to place them within the correct historical-cultural frame in relation with the system of production and uses.
Communication skills:
Knowledge and use of a specific lexicon for the history of photography.
Learning Capabilities:
Learning of an analysis model for the study and understanding of photography within the historical-cultural context.

Prerequisites
Regular student at the master's degree course, and possession of the Laurea triennale. A good knowledge of contemporary art history.
Teaching Methods
I Module: Lectures (36h).
Introduction to analysis methods for a cultural history of photography; analysis of major works and major artists in the context of production and use, analysis of materiality.
Module II: lecture and seminar (36h).
Practical experience in analysing and planning exhibition events, photographic heritage management and valorization.
The course uses slide projections. The projected slides will be made available on the Moodle platform.

Part-time students, and students enrolled on old systems who cannot attend classes must contact the instructor during reception their regular office hours and arrange a specific coursework in order to attend the final test.

Type of Assessment
I modul: oral examination about the course contents and on the required bibliography.
Students must demonstrate in the test:
1) Knowledge of the photographs, artists and contexts studied in class and knowledge of the bibliography;
2) Understanding of the main methodologies in the history of photography;
3) Skill of the specific lexicon for the history of photography
4) Critical ability to discuss the meaning of photographs.
II module: content elaboration during the course and active participation is expected.For attending students, the oral examination focuses on the bibliography and personal contribution to the course.
In the event that the student did not pass the examination, he/she will have to wait more than 15 days before registering for a new appeal.
Students must demonstrate in the test:
1) Knowledge of the photographs, artists and contexts studied in class and knowledge of the bibliography;
2) Understanding of the main methodologies in the history of photography;
3) Skill of the specific lexicon for the history of photography
4) Critical ability to discuss the meaning of photographs.

The module is realized in collaboration with the Alinari Foundation and Dry Photo. Arte Contemporanea as collaboration on ongoing projects.
It includes participation in public events.
