In addition to providing the basic notions of qualitative-quantitative chemical analysis
classical and instrumental in the field of drug analysis, the course has the
main purpose to introduce the students to practical chemical laboratory, thus
allowing the acquisition of an "analytical mindset" and critycal autonomy.
The course aims to provide the theoretical and practical bases for purification e
separation of drugs as well as their quality control.
The acquisition of these skills is demonstrated through the
analysis reports

Good knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry
Teaching Methods
Lectures (3CFU), practical laboratory exercises on single place (3CFU). Attendance to theoretical lessons is highly recommended
while the attendance to practical laboratory exercises is mandatory. The activity carried out in the single-seat laboratory provides
the use of methods that, through direct involvement of the
student, make him protagonist of the learning process.

Type of Assessment
Final assessment of learning is achieved by means of an oral exam that can be taken only after having attended the
practical laboratory exercises which deal with topics and application of the concepts discussed during the theoretical sessions. The final evaluation also takes into account the results the students achieved in laboratory exercises which are properly documented by individual reports

Frontal lectures: Purification and separation of active ingredients:
crystallization, sublimation, distillation, extraction methodologies (solidliquid extraction, liquid-liquid extraction), solid phase extraction (SPE,
SPME). Chromatography: separation theory, classification of various
techniques and their efficiency. TLC-Thin layer chromatography. Gas
chromatography and HPLC: technical application and aspects.
Application of some spectroscopic techniques in pharmmaceutical
analysis: UV, IR, 1HNMR. Introduction to mass spectrometry.
EXERCISES: Crystallization of an unknown sample; extraction of caffeine
from coca cola by liquid-liquid extraction and by SPE solid phase
extraction; separation of a binary mixture; analgesic drugs analysis by
means of TLC; recognition of mixture components by means of TLC;
water sample analysis by ion exchange chromatography
