Course Content
Learn the different classes of biomolecules, the monomers that constitute them, and their interaction with other (bio) molecules. Use organic chemistry to understand the synthesis and the function of the molecules that constitute living organisms and their possible manipulation for research and therapeutic purposes
Suggested readings (Search our library's catalogue)
A list of suggested textbooks will be given at the beginning of the course
Learning Objectives
At the end of the course, the students should be familiar with the main classes of biomolecules and the monomers from which they are formed. They should know the interactions that determine their structure and the chemistry underlying their mode of action.
Prerequisites
basic knowledge of organic chemistry
Important note: the exams of "Mathematics (Elementi di matematica e statistica)", "Physics", "General and Inorganic chemistry", "Organic Chemistry" and "General biology" are preparatory for this exam. Therefore the exam of "Bioorganic chemistry" cannot be taken if the preparatory exams have not been passed

Type of Assessment
oral exam with presentation of a scientific article provided by the lecturer concerning one of the subjects of the course, and discussion with questions on the contents addressed during the lectures.
Course program
Diversification and selection as basis for evolution. Combinatorial assembly generates diversity in nature. The energetics of reactivity and the non-bonding interactions among molecules. Nucleic acids. DNA: its structure, (deoxy)mnucleotides and their characteristics, chemical synthesis of DNA, examples of bioorganic chemistry of DNA. Alkylating agents as anticancer drugs and their interaction with DNA. RNA:difference with DNA (structure and stability), synthesis of RNA, RNA as catalyst, sliceosome vs ribozymes. Translation of RNA into proteins. Amino acids and proteins, chemical properties and structures. What are receptors, receptor-ligand interaction. Catalytic function of proteins. Enyzmes and their application in organic synthesis (examples: lipases, esterases, oxidoreductases). Coenzymes. Introduction to pharmacology. Kinases and GPCRs and their role as targets in bioorganic and medicinal chemistry. Chemical synthesis of peptides and proteins. Modifications and therapeutic applications of peptides and proteins. Examples of other applications in biotechnology. Introduction to other classes of biomolecules (glycans, polyketides and terpenes). Analysis of articles from the recent scientific literature related to the topics discussed during the course.
