Frontal lectures: Purification and separation of active ingredients: crystallization, sublimation, distillation, extraction methodologies (solid-liquid extraction, liquid-liquid extraction), solid phase extraction (SPE, SPME). Chromatography: separation theory, classification of various techniques and their efficiency. TLC-Thin layer chromatography. Gas chromatography and HPLC: technical application and aspects.
Application of some spectroscopic techniques in pharmmaceutical analysis: UV, IR, 1HNMR. Introduction to mass spectrometry.
EXERCISES: Crystallization of an unknown sample; extraction of caffeine from coca cola by liquid-liquid extraction and by SPE solid phase extraction; separation of a binary mixture; analgesic drugs analysis by means of TLC; recognition of mixture components by means of TLC; water sample analysis by ion exchange chromatography
