Course Content
The course contents consist in two main parts:
1. General Part concerning the biochemical bases of ROS and their derivatives useful to better understand biologic and biochemical processes
2. Specific Part concerning the study of the role of ROS and their derivatives in human physiology and pathology and the main markers of oxidative stress and their measure methodologies are described.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
Evaluate the clinical and diagnostic significance of the main redox-related laboratory markers useful in several physiologic and pathologic processes.
Prerequisites
Elements of Biochemistry, General Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry.
Teaching Methods
Frontal lessons and laboratory training.

Oral presentation of a scientific paper concerning the course topic.
Course program
Free radicals, Reactive Oxygen species and oxidative stress. Intracellular and extracellular ROS sources. Redox-mediated physiologic and pathologic mechanisms. Antioxidant defenses. Oxidative stress and diet. Oxidative stress and exercise. The role of ROS in human pathology.
Laboratory measure of oxidative stress markers and antioxidant capacity in biological samples: cultured cells, tissues, blood, serum/plasma for diagnostic and therapeutic uses.
ROS and oxidative markers assays by cytofluorimetric, confocal microscopy, spectrophotometric, luminometric approaches.
