SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY AND RESEARCHScientific activiy is mainly devoted to the study of spectroscopic and photophysic behaviour of molecular and crystalline systems. The obtained results are presented in more than 90 papers published in international scientific peer-reviewed journals. The research themes may be summerized in the following main points. a) Conformational isomerism and transient properties of antiaromatic molecules studied by means of fluorescence spectroscopy and femto-second transient absorption spectroscopy. The last laser technique was employed also to gain informations about photoreactivity and dynamics of biological chromophore and their correlation with structural properties. The study was coupled to optoacoustic detection of the reaction heat/volume for characterizing the non radiative part of the photochemical process. b) Optoacoustic spectroscopy was also used to investigate the non-linear absorption properties of substituted polydiacetylenes, important for their technological applications in the light signal transmission. c) Electronic properties of conjugated polymers and metallic nanosystems were determined by means of static and time-resolved laser spectroscopy: one-photon and two/three-photon transitions were revealed both optically (via fluorescence emission), and thermally (via optoacoustic detection).d) A recent field of investigations was devoted to the study of the relationship between the enhancement factor and the geometry of metallic nanostructured surfaces by means of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). For this purpose laser ablation of noble metals was employed for preparing nanostructured surfaces with high SERS activity, and this property was checked measuring SERS enhancement of the Raman bands of biological materials adsorbed onto the metallic surfaces. The surfaces were characterized by AFM and TEM measurements
e) Optoacoustic spectroscopy applied to structured nanosystems
f) spectroscopic characterization of fluorescent and phototermic organic probes.
