The course introduces to the study of medieval Romance literature, according to a comparative perspective and with particular attention to linguistics, philology and history of manuscript tradition.

Learning Objectives
Knowledge of the main linguistic phenomena concerning the transition from Latin to Romance languages; knowledge of the main aspects of textual criticism applied to the Romance literature of the Middle Ages; ability to critically analyse literary texts of the Romance Middle Ages from a linguistic and philological point of view, also in relation to the literary genres.
Prerequisites
Specific skills are not required. Basic knowledge of Latin is helpful.

Frontal lectures held with the help of powerpoint presentations.

Type of Assessment
Oral examination. The skills acquired will be verified especially with regard to philological and linguistic aspects. Questions will focus on the following topics: phenomena concerning the transition from Latin to Romance languages; fundamentals of textual criticism; literary texts analysed during the course.
Course program
Students will receive basic notions of Romance philology and linguistics through the analysis of important texts of the Romance Middle Ages.
The course will be articulated as follows:
1) Main phenomena of the evolution from Latin to Romance languages; basic notions of historical grammar of Romance languages.
2) Reading and linguistic analysis of Romance literary texts of the Middle Ages.
3) Principles of textual criticism and analysis of critical editions.
